Rick, really nice job. I see you are having fun with tilable background graphics. One thing on the production side I have noticed is that even if you tile can be really small, say 15px X 15 px, it may be better to use a larger tile, maybe 10 times as big (150 px X 150px). Many times the file size of the larger file is not that much bigger to have a big download performace hit. The advantage is that the pages load faster because the browser does not need to process the tiling of all the tiny files, keep track of them, etc. In some of the tests we have done with many tiny tiled GIF backgrounds this was readily apparent,particularly if the GIFs had trasparent regions.
